Many witches identify as empaths, which means they’re highly sensitive people who can feel everything and everybody around them. This can be exhausting and overwhelming, and it’s important for baby witches to practice self-care and set boundaries with those who drain their energy. Empaths can also have magical gifts, like seeing auras or feeling the spirits of loved ones who have passed on.
Chelsea began to make soaps as a hobby and sold them online before deciding to open her own shop. She’s always looking for new scents to add to her line, from the soothing sweetness of fairy milk soap topped with copper butterflies to the haunting mellowness of full moon. “Witch Baby Soap is a magical space, so each product has to be in line with that,” she says.
When you walk into Chelsea’s shop in Cranford, NJ, it’s like walking into a dream: colorful cakes of soap, shaped like everything from downy clouds to tiny pink rosebuds and tarot cards, fill the shelves. Jars of face masks, salt scrubs, and bath potions sit alongside witchy talismans and acorn-shaped tarot boxes.
While this aesthetic gives Witch Baby Soap a distinct brand, Chelsea views her craft as truly inclusive, accepting other cultures’ deities and beliefs, while encouraging a passion for self-care and appreciation for one’s true essence. But despite her dedication to the practice, she refuses to be a “Baby Witch.” The term denies newbie witches their agency, implying that they are helpless creatures who need to have someone teach them the right way to do things.
A better alternative is “novice witch.” Novice is less intimidating and places the responsibility on the newbie to put in the time and Witch baby live cam effort to learn the craft, whether they have a teacher or not. It also acknowledges that learning is a process, and no one can master everything at once.
Applying the word “Baby” to a witch also has other issues. It has a connotation of infantilization, which is especially harmful to black and brown women who have experienced gender and sexual discrimination in the past. It also reduces the power and authority of new witches, placing them at the bottom of the food chain.
In some villages in West Africa, it’s still common for witch doctors to sacrifice twin babies because of the special powers they believe they possess. When Adelphine’s twin sister died during birth, the other village members demanded she be taken to the witch doctor and put to death.
Eventually, she was able to convince the witch doctor not to kill her and that she could heal her sick newborn. But the villagers retaliated, burning her and her home.
Fortunately, Tenneh survived the attack and is now a powerful voice against this ancient and horrifying practice. She’s now a mentor to other witches, and her story is the basis for the Netflix series Witch Babies. She’s also an advocate for women’s rights, a feminist and anti-racist activist, and a social media influencer who uses her platform to spread positive messages about women’s empowerment.
